    Where to mount rock sliders?

    Hey all,

I'm making up a set of rock sliders because my side steps don't look too good now that they've copped a smack with a big rock. i've looked at a few sites and seen some pictures so i have a general idea of what they will be like, except for the mounting. All the sliders i've seen are mounted directly to the sill, nuts in the door jam where the plastic bit was mounted and some coming up through the floor, they seem to have reinforced the floor along there. My problem with that is, the sliders are there to protect the door, right, and if i come bashing down on a rock and the slider is mounted directly to the door, isn't it just going to transmit the shock right up to the sills? maybe they're not as weak is i think, though, so i'm sure it'd be fine.

But on the disco there are protrusions from the chassis just next to the mounts for the radius arms, to which the brackets for the side steps are mounted. they look fairly substantial to me and Offender90 mentioned to me that he and someone else were thinking of mounting sliders there. it sounds better than sticking them right there directly under the door...

so question one would be, are these protrusions up to the job, overkill or is it not a good idea to mount anything to them?

I too am in the process of building some rocksliders / sill protectors. I will be leaving the plastic skirt in place - all be it with some minor modifications to it. I have been looking at using the existing body mounts as a place to fasten them too.
I have spoken to the guys at Les Richmond in Thomastown and they have not had any problems with their rocksliders which are sill mounted.

how do you open the door if a slider is mounted directly to it

the good thing about hanging a slider off a sill is there is nothing to hang down and get hung up on!!

my sliders are connected to the sill and they have copped a real smacking on some rocks and they have not budged......

Sill mounted is the way to go but fit them in place of the plastic finisher othrwise you'll be dragging them on rocks ALL the time, not just occasionally .

Also the Disco sliders that replace the plastic sill are not level, they have a slight bend in them to match the sill and doors....

alrighty - sill mounted it is. i'm glad removing the plastic is the way to go as i already removed it and i don't think it will go back on.... not the way i did it anyway.

one more question then, how do you mount it to the sill. as far as i can tell there is no way to get a nut inside there to bolt in to. i've heard of these bolt-rivet things, something like that?

dullbird, are yours mounted just in the door jam or also from the bottom up into the sill?

Do a search for rock sliders as I posted some photo's of some that I found on Ebay a while ago that show the mounting etc.

Nutserts I think they are called - may be a product name. Mine are fitted directly to my sill on my D2 with these and it works well - 4 nutserts each slider. As for profiling the slider to the bend of the door, I beleive a few on here have done it, Slunnie being one, but I didn't bother.

    Aye, Mick
