I am told that All Diesels, Gold Coast, 07-5529-0555, ask for Brett, import aluminium 3-53 Detroit Diesels ex US military snow tractors. The wick can be turned up to 200hp in TABB spec (Turbo, Aftercooler, Blower Bypass). A lovely lightweight compact high torque engine with that unequalled Detroit two stroke exhaust note.
Probably economically comparable with retrofitting a 4BD1T or Chev. 6.5 diesel, and lighter, with more snort.

possibly the only engine that would leak more oil than a landrover motor.....and drink fuel like a petrol v8....![]()
Maybe forty years ago. Considerable improvements were made in oil retention in the seventies by DDA, and as for fuel usage, I had four 8V92TA's in line haul service, one of which was tickled up to 545hp for road train use and the fuel usage was comparable with other engines of similar output in the same applications. If you are not fed then you won't work either.
As for the noise, this is mostly blower noise and can be suppressed. Anyway, I like the sound of a Detroit under full throttle and load. Nothing quite like the sound of an 8V92TA at full bore hauling a 100 ton triple up a moderate grade in the intermediate gears.

3 cylinder, 2 stroke 2.6L. Ewwww.
I'll stick to my 4BD1T. With a bigger exhaust I'd have 200hp already with far better economy.
The chev diesel sounds like a waste of time, 130hp from 6.5L and the US army changes engines instead of oil.
The Duramax however, will that fit a landrover?
Automotive specs.
8V92TA - 435hp - 324kw @ 2100 rpm, 1242 lb ft - 1684 nm @ 1400 rpm
8V92TTA - 365 hp - 272 kw @ 1950 rpm, 1242 lb ft - 1684nm @ 1400 rpm
My fourth one was hot rodded after end of warranty to marine spec. - 545 hp @ 2300 rpm. Torque figure unknown.
A stock 8V92TA or TTA had 840 lb ft available at clutch engagement, nominally 800 rpm. Well in excess of any of its competitors. Great for heavy haulage and road train as they could lift off mightily as well as hang on.
