    Swinging barrel doorlocks

    Hello,
I'm trying to fit a locking driver's door catch to a SIIa 109 and the lock barrel of the standard optional door lock (Rover Part 337801) fouls the door skin. This is a museum vehicle so panel surgery is not an option.

I've seen series twos and two-A's with a locking door catch that has a lock barrel that pivots with or on the outer door handle and appears to lock to a post set into the door catch backing plate. They have a sort of rubber surround on the barrel.

If anyone understands my description and knows what I mean, I'm trying to locate one and they don't appear in the parts books I have. Do they have a part number? Can you buy them? If so where?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

I only know of the common barrel lock that secures to the inside lock asembly with a nut and has a cam that locks the lever, Cant think of what you are describing, the later s3s have a door lock in the door itself and not part of the actual outer door handle like the earlier fellas, it has a seal around the barrel, perhaps someone has modified later locks into an earlier machines

When viewed from outside, driver's side, door closed; the hole in the door skin that you put your hand in to work the door handle does not extend far enough to the front of the car to clear the protrusion of the lock barrel where you put the key in.

SIII have a different skin that has a seperate hole for this but some IIa's clear as well.

That sounds strange what your saying there, every 2 and 2A I have seen has the typical door lock, even the early S3s had it too, I dont know one of the gurus here will sort you out

Sorry I was wrong, the barrel hits the door frame where the lock mounts

There are two types of door locks for the traditional Landrover door lock.

    1. Barrel is attached to the main plate of the lock and has a cam on the inside that prevents the inside handle from lifting. Listed only as a complete lock 337801 by Landrover, but the lock as an add on is listed by Four Wheel Drives of Melbourne in their catalogue as P64. Not sure whether this fouls your door skin or not - didn't on my 2a.

    2. Has a special outer handle with an extra part containing the barrel, which has a hooked lever which hooks on a peg sticking out from the main plate. I can find no part number listing for this, and I suspect it is originally a Series 1 optional part. It is shown in my "Optional Equipment" List for Series 2 and 2a TP/293/B, p/n 4437 dated April 1962, revised May 1965.

As mentioned above, the antiburst door lock, optional on Series 3 (and can be fitted to any Series Landrove 86/107 onward) is different in that it has the lock built in with an operating lever on the inside as well, but this requires a hole in the door skin.

    Thanks John,
The 1st you describe is what I have and doesn't fit. The 2nd is what I'm after.

I have a very worn one (the whole lock that is, not the handle and barrel) on the Landrover that came with my overdrive. If you can't find one elsewhere I could be induced to part with it. Try phoning the various wreckers around the country - there should be one about.

I believe that's simply called an "early SII door lock". They were all there was before the IIA type you're trying to fit.

Have you tried loosening the handle and mucking about to make it fit? It sounds like you've run into the usual probelm of the huge tolerances of Land-Rover body parts!
