Thanks Dave,

I appreciate your input & this is a big help as I will be ordering parts tomorrow, I wish I could ship it off to you guys but very impracticle from my end.

We are going to do it ourselves & I have some good help, an ex Land Rover mechanic, a truck mechanic & a fitter & turner, so hopefully I should be back on the road soon.

I'm 3 1/2 hrs (260km I think?) or more to a Land Rover mechanic I trust so most repairs have to be done here when its impacticble to get them to Sydney, the price of living in the country I guess is to D.I.Y.S.

Again thankyou, I will post the end result when its back on the road, :D.

Jeff I believe your right, though I've got to get back on the road ASAP with this vehicle as its going to Cape York in 5 weeks, so no margin for waiting for parts from the UK, if I did decide to go down that path.

For a while there it looked like the Range Rover was going north instead of the Defender, as it did to Cooma over Easter. Would be fun to take it but the fuel difference costs I could do without especially now :(

Wow! :eek: It's good to know that the grand masters of Land Rover transmissions frequent this forum! :)

I know that when I made an inquiry to Dave at Ashcrofts for a full LT85 gearbox, he pointed me in the direction of their Australian distributors. For larger items like full gearboxes it's good to know that there are Aussie dealers in both Perth and Sydney.

In fairness to the anti-advertising rules of this forum it's probably best to PM me if you want to know who they are.

Where my property is it's 25km north of Orange, it's east of Molong about the same distance, also on the back road to Wellington & on the road out to Burrendong Dam.

Also my property name is on the Topo map of the area, which is kind of cool.

Anyone going to Dubbo this is the short cut, you take the Stuartown turn off, no traffic this way either.

Yes mate not that far realy. With help from Dave Ashcroft & Rover Craft (their agent) & an old contact there, I have it all under control & I thank you for your kind offer.

Now my team in Orange have to put all the bits in the right order, which I am sure they can do and I'm on my way to Cape York at the end of next month & hopefully return intact.

Not quite.. the disco R380s have a different shifter to the defender R380s. The lever is in a different position. I understand they can be converted, but its not really feasible.

At the time Max I was thinking of a certain Defender R380 box I knew was sitting in a back yard not mobile, but now have some Ascroft parts going into mine...they arrive tomorrow. The box in the Defender gone not the Rangie which is infact a Disco box.

Hopefully back on the road by next week when my guys (Clive n co) get the time to put it together, with me looking over their shoulder. :)

Just a short note to end this saga, the box is now back in the Defender very successfully with new main shaft, new clutch kit for under $600...pretty cheap considering my other options at the time.

Thanks to Chad (brindo75's brother & head mechanic at West Orange Motors...truck division) and Clive, Chad's father...& Land Rover wizard...without them the car would still be another immovable object on the farm.

Rego on Monday and it's away to Cape York on Saturday for a month.

One good side effect from this project, I am sure transfer case leak now resolved, and fixed as well while I was under there resealed sump...now no more weap & hopefully leak proof (at least for a time) time will tell.
