Make sure the belt is the right size. Sounds like you have the 1560mm belt and you need the (7pk)1580.
Has anyone had one that tensions the belt way too well?
There's no deflection on my belt at all and when I bought the car all the idler bearings were stuffed. I know from other cars this thing has way too much tension on it.
So I reckon the spring is too tight. Anyone else found this?

The belt is too short.
My Disco had the wrong belt on it when I bought it.
Can you read the belt number?

Nah, it's running the (too long) 7pk1595. It's supposed to be running the 7pk1580 as standard.
It's right on the end of the adjusters travel and it's still trying to strangle the engine pulleys.
If I put the right belt on the damn thing will be even tighter!
It's a Dayco unit, T12030. It certainly looks like it ought to be there, even has the locating dowel on the back.

Time for a pic ( With the fan off should be clear enough) - there is obviously something wrong, but at the moment none of the normal faults come to mind.
While I'm in there..... Who had that tip for greasing the fan pulley bearing in the timing cover housing? That's the only bearing I haven't replaced on this thing and I'm making damn sure it doesnt let me down on the trail!
Are you sure the Dayco is the correct one, my listing for the 300Tdi dayco tensioner is APV 1004
No, I'm not. Was already fitted to car when I bought it.
Reckon I might get rid of it and fit a new one. Lot better option than wearing everything else out.....
ERR4700 is the number on the back of the pulley arm.
It looks like the right part, it fits like the right part it's just that the tension provided is waaaaay too much.

Thanks for looking it up for me, Ron.
I did remember pricing the idler at around $100.
Have decided to go nuts and have tossed the fan and pulley as well as the idler mech. Time to fit those EF Ford fans I've had lying around. This will also give me room to install the engine oil cooler I've been wondering where to put.
I'll just get a shorter belt and make the alternator be the tensioner.
Few less things to f*** up!
