    D2 TD5 Handbrake

    No not the person sitting in the passenger seat.
    I seem to have to often adjust the hand brake to get enough tension for it to hold on a hill.
    Is that normal or is there a reason for this.

    My '99 TD5 manaual D2 has been adjusted so many times during service and is still woeful...my advice (if manual) always leave in gear with hand break on and if off road, never leave the car running when you are not in it. Just a terrible hand brake full stop. I believe a company in the UK called Exeng or something do a disc conversion kit for the D2..........I may do this when I have some $.

    It could possibly be a seal on the transfer case leaking oil onto the handbrake shoes....

    Mine is extremely good,99 TD5 man.
    Dont need to pull it on too hard at all.As sugested probably contaminated linings.

    I agree with the could be contaminated linings. This could be just a knackered seal, however output shaft nut may have come loose. You have to undo this to change the seal, so you will get a chance to check it then!

    There are 2 holes in the backing plate that allow dust and water entry - 1 on the top lip and the other facing forwards where a spring hooks. I sealed mine with silicone.

    There was a TSB issued early 2000 to remove the anti-rattle spring and to replace the adjuster bolt with one having a lesser gradient for finer adjustment.

    Thanks for the replies.
    I thought it may be from some sort of oil leak but there is no sign of a leak in that area.
    The cable either stretches a lot or the shoes wear a hell of a lot.
    Easy to say don't leave car running while not in it but when you have to get out and open gates quite a bit then turning the car off each time is a bit tedious.
    I'll just adjust it up AGAIN!! and hope for the best.
    Never had a car with a decent hand brake I should be used ti it by now.
