Timing belt. Time being the operative word.

I decided I better do the right thing and book my 300Tdi in to have the timing belt done since you can never be too sure of the history. It by VIN should have a minor repair kit fitted, however I had a look this morning at the workshop and it clearly hasn't.

If I had have driven 3 more kilometres, I reckon the belt would have broken. Its about 1/3 of the width it should be, the rest having been ground to dust and it has lost a few of the teeth, plus a few crack right through the belt.

Turns out the service history must be right! Last done 137,000 km ago. Surely that is a record on a 300!

My last one went over the 102,000km mark and it came out looking almost new
Can't say the same for the idler and tensioner bearings 'though. I reckoned they'd have been lucky to last another 20km (although in their defence they'd been there 178,800km )
No, I won't push the next one that far.

So what's generally considered a safe change interval then on a 300? My last one was changed at 90000km and still looked pretty good, however I had one break previously (on a different vehicle) at 69000km. I'm coming up to 60000km now and I'm not sure how far to let it go.

most tend to change them in the 60-80,000km window.

60,000km is the factory recommended service interval for severe conditions (which most of Oz usage seems to fit into) and 110,000km in temperate climates/conditions.

I got 80,000 out of mine and it came out nearly perfect. Probably could have gone further but I erred on the side of caution.

Pulled down a friends TDi and the timing cover was full of dust and fibre. He was lucky!

So am sticking with the change it at 60000-80000km rule.
