by tightening the steering box do you mean the adjustment on the top,try slackening this off a "tad" you should have a little play in the steering wheel.the wandering can be the driver overcorrecting when the box adjustment is to tight.

I'm with Lewy on this one, if by tightened the steering box you mean adjusted.
I gave my steering box a quick adjustment tweak and took it for a run, result ---> no self centering. It's so easy to over-do. I quickly returned home and did it properly by jacking the front wheels off the ground and using an assistant.

Your both right.The worm binds on the shaft because it is too tight.It is very very easy to do.1/4 turn is all that is in it. Pat
Or too much? - the usual symptom of too little preload is shimmy or vibration or wandering rather than lack of self centring. Lack of self centring will be due to either lack of castor or too much friction in the system, and is distinct from wandering, which will be due to free play in the steering or suspension (including wheel bearings) or lack of castor or tyre problems (inflation, tread type, size, offset).
