You REALLY need a multimeter:D
It depends on the $$$. I had a Fluke 115 and it was bloody brilliant, about $270 but it belonged to a family member who wanted it back.
TEX Onsite Online Store -and- (Test and Measurement - Fluke Australia)
For checking continuity and battery states of charge etc, I keep a few $9 DSE ones:D.
The automotive Fluke models are pretty (f-ing) expensive, but even the 115 et alia give you the ability to use K type thermocouples and proper AC V peak peak etc, all good stuff for Rover owners.
You should be able to get a Cat III from Jaycar around $60 to $80. Don't use anything less than Cat III on 240v equipment.
