td5 disco fair amount of smoke

over the last week or 2 ive noticed my car makes a fair amount of smoke. when cold it smokes under all throttle %'s and when warm it puffs out a "rude" amount when i give it say 60% or more in a hurry. is this normal? i dont remember it doing this before. seems to be black smoke rather than white. oh the cat has been taken out around the same time too. would this be the reason?

If performance is way down then the problem will be a blockage or intercooler pipe has come off.
Lots of black smoke is not normal

performance is still good, although its only between 2000-3000rpm. i guess thats normal for a diesel though. i'll get the intake system looked at while its still got warranty.

do u think the non-cat issue could cause more smoke?

I'd also be checking the inlet tract for blockages. I doubt it has anything to do with the cats.

i'll have a look tomorrow if i get the chance. are there any spray-can type things i can use to help clean out the crud? assuming there is some. i know that from the air filter to the turbo is all good, i havent looked at anything to do with egr though, nor beyond the turbo. are there any likely areas that could be blocked.

Nooooo. no spray goops down a td5... bad for sensor and if it works its only ever going to mask the symptoms for a short time at best. Bit like putting a bandaid on a complicated fracture.

is it easy enough to get to the intercooler? either remove it or clean it while in the car still? i assume it involves backwashing with a solution of some sort(plain water even?)

eyeball post 13 from that thread to clean out the intercooler.

as for the oil in the harness, replace the primary injection harness (thats the bit under the rocker cover and its a 20 minute job including removing the acoustic covers) and flush the harness with metho via one of the several methods that have been mentioned in other places. The most popular seems to be a gooped up soft drink bottle attached to the primary harness plug (the one that you disconect to check the head side for leaks) and filled with metho then allowed do gravity feed down to the ECU (disconnect it first) then cleaning the ECU plug and socket with a plastics/rubber safe electrical contact cleaner.
