Serial number?
Sounds like it's been swapped out though.
This may sound a silly question but can you identify a gearbox back to a vehicle? Reason being I just had the auto rebuilt and it has been painted in crappy silverfrost and the dirt wasn't even cleaned off the extension housing. Ok it is filthy under there so no big deal then I noticed the sump plug is not the nut type any more but an allen key. Again no big deal, then I noticed that the dip stick knob has a couple of cuts on it so it isn't the original. Add this all up and I started to think maybe this isn't my original box. May be its from a wreck. I have heard of this happening to people before so is there anyway of telling where a box comes from?
Serial number?

the boxes have serial numbers on them. on a couple of my sereis rovers all the numbers were recorded in the original owners warrenty paperwork
Didnt you write it down before you sent the box in for work?
If its a rebuilt box (allegedly) and it comes back dirty Id be making noise. 51Jay nearly got caught out with it but a lucky break and a bit of a mishap caused the problem to be identified. the "story" goes that itwas just a case of a newbie mechanic accidentally mixing up some paper work/job tags.

No didn't write down as at the time we didn't know it was going to need a rebuild.
The dirt is where they havn;t cleaned the extension to the trensfer case then sprayed the whole thing. Its just slack. There was nothing wrong with the way the box looked before. Its aloy they don't rust!
Do some Disco's have allen key sump plugs?
The box goes fine. Holds first a bit long when cold but its only done 100km.
I have to take it back anyway as they didn't connect the reversing lights or the diff lock light. The diff lock was in and I didn't notice for 20km. I also noticed the heat shield on the passanger transfere mount hasn't been fitted correctly.

given that you basically want a surgically clean environment when you rebuild an auto box due to the effect of contaminants blocking galleries or valves Id be suspect of anyone who didnt steam clean the whole casing (tcase included if fitted) prior to pulling it apart yet alone putting it back together dirty.
ok surgically clean might be overkill.

I think you should be able to contact Land Rover with your vin and they should be able to give you the rest of the serial numbers.
Well, they do it for ignition/door key codes.
