Maxi-drive axle probs on a Defender

How can the MAXI Axle be the issue????

The seal runs in the Hub and on the Stub axle, not the driven Axle....

id say poor installation and/or pitted stub axle....

If the bearings are done right and the preload is ok, then i'd look for wear in the Stub axle and if so then get another, if not then Sheeeet i dont know

How much are new stubs worth? Chromers here in perth like ICE (industrial chrome engineers) would be able to hard chrome the seal surface. That would put an end to your pitting/seal wear on the stub issue.

They are in perth, i think you would be up for around $40 each, im sure 2nd hand stubs would be cheaper but how long before you would have the same issue again?

Depending on how bad the scoring is, you could throw the stub axle in a lathe and smooth out the scoring with some emery paper or skim it very lightly. Before you refit the seal remove the spring and shorten by a few mm, this will help tension the seal more firmly

i just paid $140 for a new stub......will be definitly refurding the old one

close but no cigar..

do that and you will stuff the seal prematurly.

if your going to that much effort contact speedy sleeve get the nominal interference fit for the speedy sleve that is designed to run with the hub seal work it back to that then hammer on the speedy.

then stop worrying about it and carry a spare speedy along with the sparehub seal.

Do you mean the spring tightening? I have done it with reasonable success, granted you wont get the same life out of it, but it's a cheap save in the mean time.

Nope, speedy sleeves are a small sleeve that fits over the contact surface of the hub seal on the stub axle, PS, I don;t recommend them:D
