    Noise on Gearbox / Transfer Box

    Hi All,

    I have a 1994 Land Rover Defender TDI. While the car is engaged in a gear and I remove my foot of the accelerator a winching / grinding noise sounds which appears to originate from close to the gearbox / transfer box. If I suppress the clutch this noise disappears. When I apply pressure to the accelerator the noise also disappears.

    So it appears as though the sound is not present when there is either power on the drive shaft or when the clutch is pushed in, thus only when the engine needs to brake the drive shaft.


    Does anybody have an idea what this could be?

    How many k's has it done?
    What type of driving is it doing (lot of 4WD work? / highway? /city?)

    305,000 km and a mix of 4wd and highway. It has done its fair share of 4wd

    I haven't checked that specifically, but I do sometimes have trouble finding fourth. If I recall it does it in all gears.

    Any suggestions?

    my first guess is the input bearing on the mainshaft.

    Especially if fourth is being a pig to get.

    If it is noisy in fourth my guess is mainshaft.If it isn't it's layshaft.Where's Dave when you need him! Pat

    Thanks guys, I will check whether it's noisy in fourth and inspect the parts you mentioned. What's the cost of replacing main and/or tail shaft?
