LPG Just Fitted along with an earthshattering Tappet Rattle.

    Hi Guys,
Common logic would have to indicate that the two incidents are totally unrelated, but then I have never had LPG fitted before and I have no idea on the related consequences.
Would there be any possibility that the two incidents have some relationship?
The vehicle is a 3.9 litre Rangie 1991 which was perfectly quiet and running like a dream, that was a week ago.
Now it sounds like a Butter Churn with a severe tappet knock on the left side of the motor.
Any info would be greatfully appreciated on this one.
    Many thanks,
    Shirley...

Put a big screwdriver (handle end) to your ear and place end of scew driver to top of rocker cover ... move around & you should be able to identify which one is "gone" /// You can also use a garden hose ... bit like listening through the wall with a glass

Take rocker cover off and check the rockers for play or wear at the spot .... ball of push rod fits in to rocker arm" ... could be worn out .... If so, check them all

Question: Does the motor run rough .... Miss

    Hi Mike,
That was my next move as I could not see any reason that the fitting of LPG could be be related.
    Cheers,

Not quite ... If the setting up of gas is not done right and it is "lean or the ignition is not timed right" .. then you run the risk of "burn't valves"

Also ... and this is a topic i would like a comment from others ... I have no idea if the valve & seats on the head are suitable for gas

    Happy hunting

It does seem to run a little rough at idle......
The installation was only done about a week ago and it all was running fine.....

Being a 91 model it was assumed that because it was suited for unleaded fuel it would also be fine for LPG.
    Well that's the theory anyway...

    Get it checked out...quick

May I suggest with noise in top end that was not there before fitting LPG. Take it back to the LPG installer and ask "Why is it so" ? If your not satisfied with thier reply take it to a Land Rover savy mechanic.

I have run my '96 3.9 Disco on LPG for about 120 000 km and had no problem with the valves or seats,

I did over 350k on gas no problems and currently 15k on a motor that had already done over 300k before I fitted the gas and all is quiet.
I dont believe your gas install has anything to do with the noise poss just coincedince. You do probably have an insert come off one of the rockers where the pushrod fits. I had it happen to me all of a sudden and it is a horrible clacking noise. A second hand rocker fixed the problem and very easy to do.
