    Wheel noise - diagnosis?

    Hi all,

    Appreciating that diagnosing something from vague descriptions is never a good start, does anyone have an idea about this?:

    Defender (96) was running fine. Parked it tonight, then after a quick coffee jumped back in for the short trip home. Immediately it started making a clunking/clicking noise from what it appears to be the front right wheel, combined with a thump coming through the brake pedal when it's applied (combined with a louder noise when the brakes are on).

    Hopped out, assuming a nail or something had got embedded in it during the park. Nope, nothing there. Tyre seems fully inflated. all well.

    Got back in to drive home and it persisted... and seemed to get worse. It's in time with the wheel rotation, and if anything seems to get worse when I'm turning the steering right (and possibly a little less bad when I turn the steering left).

    Wheel bearing? CV? Anyone got any ideas or familiar experiences?

    Thanks muchly.... I'd like to have an idea of what it is before I start trying to figure it out on my own!

    Just jack the wheel up & rotate it ...... & check your wheel nuts

    Check your wheel nuts someone may have had a shot at your wheels.

    Had the same thing happen to my wifes Commodore and I checked everything, only to find out that it was missing one nut and three others were loose.
    Felt like a goose but it was a cheap fix.

    Thanks... The wheel nuts were fine, but I jacked it up and gave it a turn. And while it generally turns smooth it's definitely got a couple of big 'grab' points as it rotates around. Couldn't see what they were though...

    Diagnosis will continue.....

    Well i guess you will have to take the wheel off and check to see if you have run out of ..... Brake Pads

    Remove the wheel and check for stones etc caught between the mud sheild and the disk. Then if nothing found, I would be checking the wheel bearings. Excessive brake pedal travel can also be a symptom.

    Thanks again guys.... I'll have another look tonight when I get home, with the wheel off.

    I doubt it's the discs - they were replaced quite recently. And it was serviced only a month ago, so I doubt it's the pad. I hope it's something as simple as a stone or misaligned guard - The fact that it started so suddenly makes me hope that it is...

    ok - it's the brakes.... there's heaps of pad left, but what's happening is that the pads are dragging on the disc at a couple of spots. I can see the retainer springs and the pad plates (if that's what you call them) jerking forward when the wheel passes through them at those spots.

    could be a warped disc i guess, although they were replaced only about 5000km ago...

    excuse the stupid questions, but what are the other culprits for causing a dragging pad?

    They could be siezed or sticky calipers

    Brakes .. if your not too sure about them .. well they are the only thing that stops you

    I would have your mechanic look at them ... ASAP


    Brief note on discs ....

    All disc's have a slight warp in them, Hence they could be perfect one day & you go through water which cools them fast and leaves them with a slight warp .... This is normal

    If the discs where warped badly, then you would know as you would feel it in the steering wheel and the brake pedal (put foot on brake .. and it shudders)
