i havent driven the disco for a few weeks, since i got myself a small car for work. i took it for a slowish(50-80kph zones) drive this evening and imediately after had a look and feel under the car.

the chirping isnt there for the first 20mins of driving, but does start to come by gradually over the next 5-10kms until its almost constant between 30-55kph. mostly on gentle accel, sometimes when cruising on the flat and it fluctuates on decel.

after the drive i felt around the front driveshaft for any slack, hot spots, grease leaks and what not. each individual axle(bad word) that make up the 2 uni joints were only at a temp that i'd call cool. didnt feel any warmer than touching my own arm. also after being more thorough, the slack is wholly caused by the shaft/bearing that goes into the transfer case. is this a problem in itself.

what i didnt do is check the rear driveshaft or pay any attention to the front joint that has the boot over it on the front shaft. although previously there was nothing of note. except for a fair amount of backlash in the front diff.

with this info does anyone know what might be causing this noise? i really thought that i'd be able to feel some heat in at least one section of the DC joint.

I'd be inclined to take the front shaft out and have a good look at it on the bench, its only 8 bolts to remove. If there is any damage and its caught early enough the shaft can be rebuilt for around $300 - $350. If you leave it too long you may have to change the entire shaft. Lots of Beer Tickets

If you do take the shaft out, ensure wheels are chocked so vehicle cant move and mark the corresponding drive shaft flanges and slide joint so that it goes back in the same position. Any signs of wear in the uni bearings or bearing caps/seals and i'd be getting a rebuild.

    Cheers, Phill

I have a soft chirping noise at present, but also with a slight vibration. Only happens when decelerating, and when stationary moving the gear selector from N to P. This always started after approx 20 mins of driving.

I was sure it was driveline or Auto related, but last weekend tracked it to the EGR solenoid. It must be dry and not moving smoothly.

I don't know if this is the same as you are experiencing but if you can't find a driveline fault possibly something to consider.

Will replace the solenoid this coming weekend, and hopefully it is not something else causing the solenoid to act this way.

Could be what my problem was...

Replaced the tensioner pulley and that got rid of the primary squeak. Then had to replace the idler pulley (where ACE pump would be) and hey presto no more squeaks

another evening of having a look around the front shaft. the bit that has the rubber sleeve on it has some play in it. is this a hidden uni, or a sliding/splined joint? could this freeplay cause my noise. i'm still 99.5% sure that the DC joint is completely fine.
