    Gear box noise

    G'day,

I am looking at buying a 2001 Defender.

This vehicle has a noise in the gear box when driving. The noise disappears when the clutch is pushed in.

The owner says that it is the thrust bearing and is an easy repair.

Does anyone have an idea what it could be? and how much it would cost to fix?

    Cheers

Theoretically the thrust bearing shouldnt be turning while you are driving along sounds more like an input bearing or something not as simple to fix

The bearing itself isn't all that expensive, it's just that the labour of getting it out and back in gets you. Then there's the question of how much else is wrong in there. The only way I know to wreck an input bearing is run the gearbox low or out of oil...

    Thanks Dan,

I will steer clear of this one.

I am after a second hand td5 defender extreme.

Any particular things I should watch out for?

    Cheers

I would look for 2003 onwards. There were significant changes made to the head which was previously prone to cracking. Also post 2002 you get the updated dash, electric windows & central locking. Not sure when the rear diff was changed from the Salisbury but that might be another consideration.
