Shaking vehicle

I had this excact same problem and it drove me nuts for months. Changed tyres, shocks, steering dampner.
Turned out to be, the previous owner bent the steering protection tube, and replaced it. The top 2 nuts on the panhard rod bracket that attatches to the chassis rail on the right hand side(one of which you have to undo) were not up to torque. 3/4 of a turn on the top after the middle was retorqued 1.5 turns. Problem solved.

Run your spanner over EVERYTHING concerning the front end, check for play, drop a shaft, THEN replace bits.

Must say a big thank-you to driveline services for this one.(I did get new beefy uni's for both shafts and a balance of them too, as well as a new slip joint)

Another thing to look for is an out of round or bent wheel - even if balanced.

And make sure you have not picked up a lump of mud on the inside of the wheel since it was balanced (whether this is applicable depends on where you have been since then!)

Have exactly the same problem on my Disco. New tyres, rebalanced four times. Now advised the bushes need replacing in the steering arms ? They do look shot. Booked in for next Thursday. I'll let you know if it fixes it.

I'm 60/40 between wheel balance & swivel bearings.
Would'nt you need a bump to start a swivel bearing to shimmy?

Actually it is probably rare for the problem to be entirely one factor, but once you lose the damping of the swivel preloads, it only needs a very minor out of balance to start it shaking, same probably applies to any other major problem such as loose bushes. But of course, if it is far enough out of balance, it doesn't matter how good everything else is.

Gets my big tick of approval...

doesnt have to be a swivel bearing tho, It can be almost any of the suspension bushes or links.

I finally got round to sorting things out properly. The culprit was, as suggested, the steering damper. Fitted a salvaged one, problem gone. I'll buy a decent one soon. Thanks for all your help!

A steering damper does not cause the problem. A faulty one just doesn't hide the problem. The issue will still be somewhere else in your front end.
