inspecting the transfer case in a d2 td5.

do i have to remove the drum brake to do this. i tried yesterday while servicing the car and its impossible to get a tool into it. is there an easy way that i'm just not thinking of.

also my front diff has a wierd topup/inspection hole plug. its round and just has a massive flat head screwdriver sort of notch in it. what tool would work for this. no screwdriver is any where near large enough.

    thanks.

No you shouldn't. A 1/2" drive breaker bar or tee bar should fit into the plug and just about squeeze between the drum and the transfer case.

As for the diff plug, can you post a photo?

You can just use a spanner or shifter onto the outside of the diff plug. It is plastic though, so be careful not to round it off.

cheers guys. sorry i dont have a photo at the moment. basically if u draw a circle and put a thick straight line all the way through it, thats how it looks. about 5-6mm thick.

i used a couple of different sockets and breaker bars yesterday. all of mine cant get into the slot as the drum wont allow straight on access.

slunnie, is my front diff plug standrad then. its different to the rear plug, which has a smaller screwdriver acess and is hex shaped anyway. i dont think there's enough protrusion for me to get anything onto the outside of the front one.

Thats a good question. I hadn't seen them without the hex, mind you its not something I go looking at either. You may ned to improvise with something like the top of a can opener, some flat bar or something like that.... I agree that the slots are not typical screwdrivers sizes though.

Actuall, my ones have been replaced with brass ones too.
    Cheers

The square drive behnd the hand brake is best tackled with a 3/8th female to 1/2inch male adaptor on a 3/8th extention bar with the 3/8th drive ratchet

I just use a 1/2" wobble drive extension bar.

I think this is how just about everybody does it. Works for me. I really dont know why you would use a 3/8 or even fit in the adaptor.
