Exclamation Temperature Gauge going mental in td5 90

Just drove from Nundah to Darra and my temperature gauge went from sitting in the middle to about 11 third then to 2 thirds then to hot then to cold and back to the middle over about 500m. it did this about 5 times. i stopped every time it hit red on the gauge and felt temp of radiator and expansion tank and didn't feel overly hot.then after the fith time the temp gauge went to the cold spot and has stayed there since.

    Any ideas of whats wrong?
i checked ecu plugs to see if oil had made it there but it is clean.

I would back what Reads said, had this happen to me on a vehicle and traced it back to an earth connection on the block which seemed tight but not tight enough when the motor was hot. Not sure how this translates to the set up on a td5 though.
