    TD5 Disco Temp variation

    Noticed this week driving to work that the temp takes a lot longer to get to operation level and then doesn't stay there. Goes up and down depending on load ( I'm talking country driving here ).
    Would I be correct in pressuming the thermostat has gone off the rails ?
    Got plenty of coolant, water pump new, head gasket new, everything else seems okay.
    I've ordered one anyway because I figure its the easiest thing to fix. Ill keep you informed.
    Oh I forgot to mention its been a bit cold here lately, not Sydney cold but real cold , might be why it hasn't over heated .

    Re-Bleed ASAP,most likely still has air.
    Loosen cap so it doesnt pressurize,go for a drive to warm engine with the climate control to high.Undo the cap after squeezing top hose to ensure no pressure(engine off),undo bleed screw,top hose.Unclip overflow bottle and lift as high as it goes,refill to coolant freely runs out bleed hole.Put everything back together,all done.

    Well I bought a new thermostat and installed it last night ( that was a fun job !!!! ).
    5 hours later and frozen to the core all was back together and everthing is fine.
    The car now runs at the correct temp and I have a heater again.

    must have been a mongeral job.i have looked at it a few times & thought i hope i never have to change one.

    just as a matter of interest,did you use the same spring hose clips or did you replace them with worm drive type

    Mongrel job,you bet!!!!
    Replaced ALL my cooling system hoses recently.Them pathetic spring clamps made the job doubley harder plus caused lots of bark to be lost and LOTS of swearing.
    I DONT HAVE ANY SPRING CLAMPS ANY MORE,cost heaps to replace with good quality stainless ones,BUT THEY WERE A BREEZE TO INSTALL

    I tried to use the spring clamps but after some time and lots of free advise to the clamps I took the thermostat out and removed the clamps and replaced with stainless screw up ones I just happened to have. Had it done up in no time !
    I don't mind the spring clamps if there is enough room to use them but in the confined space under the fan between the radiator and the intercooler hoses, it was always going to be a challenge.
    The correct proceedure would have been to remove the fan but a special tool is needed for that.
    Even with the fan out I would imagine the job would only be marginally easier.

    the reason i asked about the clamps is because the mech that does the work on our work vans recons they are better because they put a constant pressure around the hose where a worm drive one puts uneven pressure around the hose,& they can be overtightened.
    he also always uses new spring ones as he recons they can lose their tension.

    i generaly use new quality stainless ones as said by others.
