sand in the disk brake shield plate thingo's probobly be the cause, not the hand brake i doubt,, had this with my old d2 a bit, mainly in mud but ocassionally after being well bogged in on the beach, especialy with wet sand(its was raining here at stockton today)
ive just had the front breaks and rotors(?) replaced
can i ask how to check the cdl?
to check your CDL, jack up one wheel and drive forward slowley, car should drive forward,
Have you got a manual CDL, or is it a viscus center diff in yur D1 ?
if its a viscus jack up one of the back wheels and try driveing forward....
The reason I ask is that the loud noise you first heard then slowley going away to be replaced by clunkie changes in the auto, coupled with a lot of movement in the front prop shaft could indecate a problem with the front output shaft,,
and if its a viscus centere diff you would still drive, (but not with one wheel in the air)

to check the CDL
park brake on, CDL off, Tcase + and main trans in N (not park for autos)
jack up the front wheel and try to turn it It should turn freely
CDL to on
Front wheel should no longer turn other than to take up the slack in the drive line.
With the CDL confirmed off and the vehicle chocked lift one wheel at a time if its anything downstream of the auto it will make the noise when you lift up and turn the relevent wheel.... It might be hard to detect as you wont be putting the torque or load onto the system that normal driving does.
is the handbreak drum just to the back of the transmission case? a big round thing? ive never been sure what that is, but it seems to cause the sound....
i'll check everythign out liek cdl,
if that is the handbreak is contaminiated, what can/should i do? is it cheap etc?
what could explain the play in the front driveshaft is it worth looking at?

If it wont come out the with a 5/8 socket you loosen off the adjuster to the front of the backing plate under the TC.
The extra play in the shaft is more noticable due to it being loaded and unloaded due to the handbrake being affectively on a little bit.
I use the handbrake on steep decents in mine and if you accelerate through it (like they teach you in the how to drive a toyota course) then you get the knocking from the backlash in the drive train.
The repair should only cost you about 30mins of stuffing around under you truck.:D

after some toying around with the car, ive isolated the noise i first heard on stockton to the fat round stubby cylinder that has the rear drive shaft leaving it. if thats the hand break cylinder then i think im in luck and it wont be bad, the play in the front drive shaft is the same as in the rear when the handbreak is off or very close to being the same.
the only issue that leaves the more sever nature of the gear chnages which is noticable in low range... do u think that will go away when i clean the handbreak drum?

Just do as I and others have posted and stop stressing, without actually driving the car that is the best anyone can do as far as diagnosis if your not entirely sure what componants are what makes it even more difficult.
I had the same issue with my D1 when I first got it. After a drive in Mt Mee and using the handbrake on some really steep hills (pulled it on really hard).
Made a clunk going into out of first gear in my manual Disco also.
I worried about it for a bit thinking transfer case but took it to a specialist and as soon as he released the handbrake he knew it was adjusted too tight (not enough movement in the lever).
Backed off the hex bolt adjuster on the front of the drum and it has been fine ever since. Although it has been readjusted and removed and cleaned etc since then over the past 2 years.
Just look on the lower forward facing part of the drum for a hex headed adjuster. Loosen it and see if the noise goes away. Just be aware that if you loosen it too far your handbrake won't work properly. Easiest fix in the history of Land Rover fixes.
