mmm had a headgasket go on a 300 TDi 90 and that did not have oil in the water (as it went though a oil way and clinder and not water way and champer) and did not over heat ( but having the gasket go between the oil way and cylinder would make the engine chuff the way you describe it is, as the compression gases are going into the crank case of the enigne ) . I did not notice there was something up untill i stopped at a traffic light and saw the smoke that was coming out of the back

yes looks like we both post at the same time in regards to oil getting in and getting pressurized no1 and no4 on ours

yes it does sound like a steam train, thats how we described ours in our 110% post in the defender section;)

Hi Andy,

As others have said, head gasket, it is a classic failure. The only other thing I would suggest to do is when it is off, remove and drain the intercooler, as it will be full of engine oil, and will get blown straight in the intake manifold on the first test drive and blow the engine to bits...:eek:

Hi JC, I normaly use Merv Bassett at Bob Jane, in Devonport, he seems to know his way around a Landy, although he doesn't like to work on them he still does a good job (as far as I can tell anyway), he replaced the timing belt and did a couple of other small jobs for me.

I'm keen to hear if you have any knowledge of him or if you have any Devonport contacts. Launceston is still a bit far away, I am working shift work on a wierd rotational roster. I would like to have a go at it myself only time is not on my side. I have a 2a in the shed that I will be doing all my own mechanicals on.

Still think you need to move up here, we grow Bananas and Pineapples during the summer months and catch Coral trout 200m offshore. This is the sunshine end of the state :angel:.

Ooo er... 140K and blown head gasget. One of the ones I'm looking is on 137K...

The other one is on 270K though. When you're buying second hand I guess you never know when it's gunna go...

in my opinion (diesel mechanic by trade) id say either turbo seal head gasket or smashed piston caused the oil consumption and the choofing out of the rocker cover sounds like blow by
more than likely it has grabbed a piston or possibly dropped a valve and put a hole in a piston
if it has been starved of oil then it is more than likely grabbed a piston in the cylinder , possibly grabbed big end or cam bearing,damaged rocker assembly and the list goes on but that is worst case scenario
but as others have said possibly head gasket
for your sake i hope it is the later
