    My brother bought a County with the 3.5 and ran it until it was almost dead...blown head gasket but still towing a 2 tonn camper on beach sand.

    So he decided on his conversion - pulled the 327 Comaro motor from the shed after 15 years in retirement after being used in a hot HK and re-coed it for about 450 horses and stuck it in...with dual tranfer cases and Patrol auto, with custom rear drive shaft, but LR original darnas. It sounds a bit fatter than a County should

    One of the best things about an LR is the V8...and the weight of the motor which makes it very nice off road and on.

    I would get a nice 3.9 with low kays, or re-co a clapped 3.9 and never look back. (ohh...stick in a performance Scorcher ford V8 remanufactured Dizzy and HEI module and dont ever worry about Lucas again).

    Had one also and the heads which there are 4 individual ones are crap.
    I know this, but it is a diesel, and I would still prefer this to a GM 6 cylinder. I like the idea of a 4BDI turbo even better though.

    The Holden 6 cyl conversion is common in Series II and III Landies but is not really ideal as the Holden motor is tuned differently, revs differently and has different power / torque curves to the original motors.

    As others have said I would stick with the V8 unless you wanted to spend extra $$ for the 4BD1. 3.9 Land rover engine - eBay V8 Engines, Engines, Components, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 16-Aug-08 18:59:09 AEST)

    yeah i thought the 6cyl motor would be cheeper to run than the v8 but ok sounds like not to good thing to do
    why go for the isuzu motor thogh are they good? i didnt thing it would fit being a truck engine.
    was there a 4cyl petrol engine in the countys or 110s like there was in the seres 3
    how much petrol would the v8 use? and can you drive it on p plates?
    are countys good or should i look again at the rangie?

    There is no point in having a diesel if it is always off the road being repaired. That is quite possibly the future that awaits you if you get a Rangie with a VM.

    300 Tdi is quite acceptable in a Rangie and it is a conversion that I have pondered a few times for my 88 Rangie.

    Dont bother with an engine conversion unless you have money to do a fair bit of sorting and the V8's are not bad on fuel if on gas but can be exxy to run on petrol.

    I'd be saving your coin and looking at a 300Tdi Disco for around $9 to $10k in reasonable nik.

    You can drive any LR product V8 on your P plates as far as Im aware but other states may be different.

    I dont think they made a 4cyl 110 or county for OZ but maybe for other countries but I doubt that it would be a worth while conversion.

    If you want a bit of luxo then go the Rangie if you dont mind a bit less luxo or at least 80's style luxo then the Disco 1 would be your pick and if your into rough and ready and not needing luxo of any sort (other than a radio) then go for a county or 110.

    I think that covers your questions.

    Oh and the 4BD1 was available in the County so there is a factory connection to the Isuzu engine and it fits fine as it is only a 4 cyl 3.9ltr.

    The main problems with them is they are apparently noisy and in NA they are not quick but Turbo'd they are pretty good but the rev range is apparently very narrow so it is not the sort of engine you have if you like revs.

    As far as how much pertol will a Rangie V8 use.....how long is a piece of string, where do you drive and how many k's do you do etc.

    One of the V8 boys might add some figures that they get but it really does depend on how you drive it.
