Disco 1 New Hitch - but what has the sparky done!?
Hi,
I'm interested in opinions on my experience at the local 4x4 shop today.
I have a Disco series 1 (97) v8 auto and today I put it in to get a Hayman Rees hitch receiver fitted. Its the first bar the car has had. Everything looks ok including the 7 pin flat connector sticking out the back. The spec plate even has a ball weight rating of 250kg which is great - Ive read the threads on the history of Discovery ball weights.
However when I started to inspect the cabling I found something odd. The 7 pin round plug that sits behind the RH rear cargo area near the tail light, already connected into the Discos cabling, is still sitting there unused? I expected it to be used (thats what its for isn't it) and dropped down through the bottom of the floor and then extended to run to the 7 pin flat connector that the trailer plugs into! Instead there is a single red wire tapped into the harness behind the tail light and it then runs down through the floor to a messy set of wires with some finally running to the 7 pin flat connector but others running to the rear lights on the bumper bar? Looked very different when I took it in.
Haven't connected a trailer up yet to see what happens, but the wiring looks like it hasn't been done the expected way even though it may work - dont know??
Should I be worried?

The fitter would have just tapped into the wires behind the tail light. The single wire is probably for the indicator from the opposite side he took the rest of the feeds from.
It will still work fine. He just obviously didn't realise he could have saved himself a heap of time by using the supplied trailer loom.
Mine was the same from the previous owner but I changed it to use the proper loom when I fitted my electric brake controller.

Thanks and much appreciated - that would explain it and there are probably lots of discos running around with the same issue. But I think I'll get it sorted out because all those loose wires hanging down under the car in that position are a problem waiting to happen.

You can actually buy the loom from Land Rover for not much money. I fitted my Disco 1 with a tow socket and it's far easier than trying to tap into the wires. The electrician probably used those horrible scotch locks. Whereas a LR loom just plugs into the socket behind the OS rear light.
