is the 2000-3000kms lots of very small trips, or a few big "holiday" type trips? if the former, i'd still do 6mth changes with which ever oil you like.(personally i use penrite diesel5 for my td5) if it's 2 or 3 bigger trips that do your km's, then a single oil change before the first trip of the year is probably ok.

in saying that, in an ideal world, it'd be great for an engine in good nick to have it's oil changed after every trip.(perhaps a little excessive) as new oil is good oil.

Mainly day trips, no short drives, so oil gets to warm up properly.

some lube manufacturers say so many kilometers or so many days.. mainly 60 or 90 if my memory serves me rightly.

Does anybody get their oil analysed when they change it to see if they could extend their service interval?

A 200tdi is supposed to have an oil change every 6000 miles = 3750km.

I reckon therefore that every 3000km would sound about right. Change it a bit more often if you have periods where the engine has to work hard from cold, or for extended periods in adverse conditions, otherwise stick to the recommended intervals.

Its probably more beneficial to get the grease gun out and change / clean the air filter say every 1700-2000km and run the oil to 3500km.


You can use a synthetic oil, but to be honest, in the engine I wouldnt bother, neither do I bother in the swivels or diff's. It is worth it in the T/Box and Gear box though, assuming you have no leaks (!) where the oil can stay in for longer periods.

Its not the km's that can potentially do the damage. Most heavy machinery has its oil changed on hours of running. That said some of the new stuff doesn't need oil changes, you just top it up!

The 3 main issues I face are: low km's, harsh conditions and extreme temperatures. For this reason I change my oil at worst every 12 months.

Oil left standing will breakdown, its a chemical cocktail after all - especially the synthetics - and this means it looses its ability to do a proper job. The same applies if its subjected to high temperatures and also if it is forced to do its best because of the driving conditions.

Look up the maintenance schedule for the 200Tdi and note the bit about conditions. From memory it goes down as low as recommending an oil change every 250km or every day. I've just changed all the oils (except gearbox) in my new Defender after 10 days from new as the recommendation is a 5000km interval for what I was doing since getting it.

Um..., actually 6000 miles = 9656 km. I would say that engine oil changes at 3000km under "normal" circumstances would be ridiculously excessive. But as others have stated it depends on conditions etc. In your case I'd probably opt to do it six monthly (if that helps).
