    Defender td5 head gasket

Recently I have had some issues with coolant overflowing through the coolant resevior cap (Over pressurising) after trying to bleed it numerous times with no change, I have come to the conclusion that my problem might be much worse. I pulled off the accoustic cover and and found the whole front of the engine is wet and black. I am thinking the head gasket has gone. I am hoping that it is not worse, my main worry now is that I may have left it too long and it's going to cost me a bomb.

    A couple of things:

    1) Can anybody give me an idea of what's involved with replacing the head gasket?
(I found robert42's thread about replacing his HG, there was mention of another thread about what is involved but I couldn't find it - would be happy if someone could point me to it)

2)If it's really not a job to attempt myself can anybody recommend someone nearby (Peakhurst) that is able to do this for me.

    3) Any idea what I might be looking at cost wise - for all possible scenarios?

    Thanks for your help

    Josh

    UPDATE:

Just rang Coopers he quoted $3,300(approx) for a full head service (reseat valves etc, basically a top end rebuild by the sounds of it), if it is the head gasket.

He mentioned that the oily front of the engine is more likely due to the large disc seal located there and the coolant issues could be a whole raft of different things so I guess I just need to find a good reputable mech nearby or go to coopers and get it properly diagnosed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the head gasket hasn't gone and that it is something simple like a cooling fan or some other simple thing. ("In my dreams!"...yeh I know)

I shall keep you all informed of my ongoing progress.

I'm still open to any suggestions re mechanics.

    cheers

if youve never done a head gasket yourself before on something with an OHC then I would suggest that you dont do it yourself...

If your confident enough to do a head gasket on an OHC engine, have done one before and have all the tools you need and know what your checking for in terms of flatness then its a go-er for yourself...

grab a copy of rave, read the bit on the head gasket, then have a think about whats involved. Now work out what its going to cost you in tooling, parts and having the head checked then weigh that against the outcome if you get something wrong....

But get the Rave Cd first...

I should be OK I have the RAVE cd I just need to find it again. I had it installed on my computer then I did an upgrade and need to find it in order to re-install it. Thanks for your offer.

Peter Davis did mine, all good now, might be worth getting an engine monitoring system to keep an eye on coolent levels and temps, also EGTs which i discovered are very high, higher than i thought they would be, this is a major cause of head gasket failure.

Coopers did my head gasket, price included new fan, radiator, head gasket, head overhaul, replace two sus valves and machine, exhaust manifold machine and 6 new studs. They did a dyno run to confirm diagnosis of blown head gasket. Drive in, drive out for all of the above on D2, $3500. Can only but praise them for doing a great job at a reasonable price in only two days.

    Cheers

Thanks JF1065, I'll definitely consider them once I get the diagnosis from Peter Davis.
