    diff fluid

Hi, Just got back last night from 3 weeks at cape york so lots of river crossings. But more about the trip later. I have just droped the rear diff oil, and out came 3 big globs of metalic gray stuff. I run syntrans 75-90 castroll in both diffs. I also have a magnetic plug which was coverd in the stuff.

So my only assumtion in that there is something mashing/grinding in the diff somewere.

The diffs are not noisy in any way so not sure what it is.

I changed all the fluids before I left and the same thing happend. lots of grey metalic stuff.

I have done lots of water crossings and general abuse on the weekends but would like to know if this stuff is normal.

My car is a 99 series 2 disco. The colour of the droped diff fluid was dark red but not milkey so i dont think any water has got in the diff.

I used to run castroll epx 90 and it was milkey white when i changed it after a trip but no metalic goop came out.

Any ideas as to what the stuff is.?

Hi I have just droped the front diff fluid and no metalic stuff came out and a good bright red colour so something is going on in the rear diff.?

how are the breathers routed in our D2's? perhaps the rear is faster to suck in small amounts of water. i'd also hazard a guess that the dif gears get a harder workout in the rear with tight turns. also do the 2 tyres on the back have even amounts of wear? if not, then the diff is being 'used' all the time.

    Mine was opposite.
Front diff as you describe, rear reasonably clean. The front had water in it,rear only a trace of water.

Does this mean that the goop that comes out is water in the fluid? when running synthetic fluid?

How Do you explain the metalic/ sort of like very fine metal fillings stuck to the diff plug.

I think I will pull the diff out and inspect. smack smack smack smack.

The misses says i thought you were trying to sell it.... truth is, I am still in love with it and can't seem to part with it. Hopless I know but it has just gone through torcher and an extra 11 000 kays in 3 weeks and didn't complain once other than the 3 amegos lighting up, but that is normal for a D2owner.

    peace out.

Yes I have had a few cans!.

I am pretty sure the fronts have worn more than the rears but will check.

Last rotation was about 20k ago

Lots of tight turns but mainly straight dirt roads lots of corrigations.

Breathers are factory and have not changed them. may be too low in the rear as they are just above the chassie rail in the rear the fronts are up in the engine bay. This maybe it. time to extend i think.

Mine has semi synth. The grey I believe is emulsified oil.The extra metalics???? perhaps as the oil has foamed/frothed and also the fuller quantity its collected extra debris that doesnt normally get into the oil?????? Theory only, need the site mythbusters to confirm/bust/plausible the idea.
