    transmission chatter on a 96 300tdi disco

    hi guys,

im new to your forum and compared to other lr ones that ive been on this seems to be far the most knowledgeable :-)

    enuf of the compliments!

i recently changed my clutch, pressure plate, clutch fork and thrust bearing hoping this noise would be resolved, alas, when car is idling in neutral and the clutch pedal raised (obviously) this rattling/chattering takes place and only disappears either when gearbox is engaged and car is traveling at a decent speed or clutch pedal depressed.

i was told my local land rover specialist that the gearbox bearings could need replacing.

    any ideas?

This sounds like fairly common Tdi idle chatter to me. It depends on its severity whether or not the trans needs attention, but I would say that if gearchanging is good, and there isn't any excessive noises while under load, IE whining etc, then it sounds pretty normal.
Try raising the idle a touch, this may get the gearbox mainshaft rotational speed out of that 'rattle' zone, which is a torsional vibration in reality, caused by the engine's torque pulses at certain engine speeds.

Some Tdi's are worse than others in this department.
