I am looking at diff options for a SWB series 3. I was hoping to stick in a salisbury, but looking at another post it seems to be a less than perfect fit with the prop shaft angles![]()
What other options are available to strengthen the rover diff? Is it possible to get a true trac LSD that will fit in the rover carrier and accept the stronger 24 spline axles, or do they only accept the 10 spline axles?

Sounds interesting, how did you overcome the prop shaft issues? is the nose of the diff inclined slightly upwards?
There are millions of options, depending on your level of machining/fabricating ability:
Sals (custom spring mounts and prop shaft needed)
Coiller axles (front is a PITA, but doable)
24-spline centres, sals axle shafts and custom/modified drive flanges
24-spline centres and Hytuff / Rovertracks axles
toyota 8" centres and custom (McNamara or Rovertracks) axles
toyota 60 series (complete) axles
I was hoping to get away without doing too much fabrication.
so 24 splines centers are available for the diffs? are these a drop in replacement for the standard center?
All discos from about 1994-on were fitted with 24-spline centres, as were other landie models. These centres will bolt straight in in place of your standard centre. Only problem if they are 3.54.
So you can bolt in some 24-spline hemispheres or some lock-rites (etc.). You will still be up for custom axles and drive flanges. About $500+ for the rear and more for the front - since you need to upgrade to CVs at the same time.
Just stick the Sals inIf you don't mind a grader blade under you. Prop is no drama if set up corectly. Just don't put long travel shocks in or the spline may part company on down travel

If the vehicle is standard, I'd hunt around for an old Macnamara bolt operated diff lock. The will upgrade the axles to 24 spline and give you a 6 gear carrier with the added bonus of a rear diff lock. You can pick them up for a couple of hundred bucks when they turn up. These diff locks just bolt into the existing housing, and fabrication is required.
So if a disco center is used, i will have a different ratio? or can the crown wheels be swapped?
what is the difference between the axles and drive flanges used on a sals and the rover 24 splines? i'm guessing the axles are different lengths, but would have thought the drive flanges would be the same.

Disco are 3.54:1, series are 4.7:1. With 3.54s it would be quiet on the highway, but hopeless offroad and you would be using 3rd in 60 zones. You can fit 4.7s to a coiller centre, but you need a spacer for the crownwheel. MDE used to make one, but not sure if anyone else does now they have closed - maybe ARB?
Sals halfshafts (axles) are shorter - which is why you would need custom axles.
Genuine LR 24-spline axles aren't much stronger. They downgraded the quality of the steel about the time they changed from 10 to 24 spline. But SIII salisbury 24-spline axles aren't too bad.
