Mineral or synthetic oil Tdi 200 ?

    Hi,

I have just done my second oil and filter change at 5,000 clicks on my rebuilt (about twelve months ago) motor Tdi.

I looked at the synthetic oils and got some advice from guys here on which one to go for. I have been advised that you can go 10,000 between synthetic oil changes however it seems uneconomic at approx 4 x the cost.

It's only a half hour job to change the oil and filter however I wondered if anyone on this forum could advise what they do and why ?

I had my old 94 Disco for ten years and only ever changed the oil and filter every 10,000 without any probs. Is it different for the diesel motor ?

    I appreciate any input.

    Regards

    Martin

I've owned many cars - old and new, big and small, petrol and diesel - over the years, and my favorite oil by far is Castrol Magnatec (you can get for both petrol and deisel engines), and I swear by it.

Its all I ever used in my old 300TDi when in the UK, and a 1991 2.4TD Surf that I've just got rid of. Both those diesels ran VERY well on it. And its not overly priced. Admittedly its not 100% synthetic, but worth a thought if you are looking for something other than the regular oils.

My D2 V8 is just about to have its first oil change since I've had it, and will most definitely be using Magnatec in it.

Here's some other praises for Magnatec I found for you...

I tried to keep oil and filter changes between 5000 and 7500km's.
    Certainly no more than 7500.
5000 is just good maintenance and will obviously be better, but I don't think its such an essential necessity as some make it out to be, especially with semi synthetic or synthetic oils.
I just thought 7500 was a good compromise between 5000 and 10000 and it suited me fine with no issues.

I use mobil synthetic in my v8. I believe the engine is quieter with it.

    oil for tdi200

Having owned a 200tdi this is what I thought and did at the time---
Synthetics are a superior oil as stated by their specs. and change times and is what I now use in the td5, BUT, I was well informed at the time that in older engines there is the possibilty the oil seals will not cope (being older design, specs) with the better viscosity of synths. and leak. My tdi did not leak a drop so I was loath to risk it and stuck to top quality minerals (PM Lubricants in fact) and regular 5000K changes -- I was probably dropping out good oil but because diesels unburnt fuel and soot "absorb" into the engine oil I thought of it as cheap insurance--- 270000K and running sweetly.

Penrite HPR diesel in both the Tdi and V8,why? because I only need one oil.The V8 has twice the cylinders so a bit more detergent won't hurt it. Pat

I've seen the difference from various oils in race motors, so I chose to use the best in my engines. Its easy and cheap to throw oil at it if the engine if its going to last. I use Mobil 1 (I never seem to see Mobil Delvac 1 around), its expensive but the wear should be negligable and it keeps the turbo oil passages squeeky clean by preventing buildup. Its also available in viscosities that suit the TD5.
    Cheers

... I dont use Castrol GTX diesel anymore.

Surely the only real test of an engine oils "worth" is at strip down time.
Had always used Castrol thinking it was a reasonable product.
Until I had the occasion to pull the bottom end of a 300tdi after just 20,000km. It had 4 GTX oil changes with filters in that time. Lower big end slips were down to copper on all pots???? Surely a bit excessive!

    Im now using Penrite
