Thread: TDI300 Turbo Question

Hi All

I have a turbo whistle that has recently gotten significantly louder recently. The whistle noise has a high frequency pulse to it, like vanes in the turbo biting the air as it spins.

The noise is there on boost, not idle or revving without load.

Can i trick the turbo to give me boost whilst revving in the garage to help track down the source ?

I know it will be a hose, hose clamp or gasket leaking somewhere, just trying to fast track the real cause.

But if you have a turbo problem, disconnecting the compressor inlet and outlet while the engine is idling should show it up. The turbo still spins quite quickly at idle. Beware to keep all tools and fingers from the intake.

yes this is possible but not really an effective method to find a turbo problem.
A visual inspection while engine is off will show 90% of turbo problems if you remove the intake hose to the turbo and feel for axial movement in the shaft and look for excessive oil in the intake compressor housing. This will show any faults, but the noise described sounds like a boost leak to me.

but yes with the engine idling with no hoses connected to turbo comp housing is safe enough to do if you wish but i recommend removing hoses with engine off as an apprentice i knew a few years ago sliced the tip of his finger off in a turbo when he slipped removing an intake line it sounds stupid i know but things happen very quickly
