    Rangie Brakes and steering wobble

    Hi brainstrust.
Just had a new to town and future WA AULROian drop in asking about a couple of issues.1983 Rangie.
He is getting a fair wobble up in the front end.I suggested the bushes where the diff mounts could be split,he says there is some movement there. If I still have a spare steering damper I will give it to him to try.
Brakes. He has to bleed weekly.Gets a good pedal when bled then all of a suden a week later the pedal goes to the floor.
    Thanks Peoples

wheel wobble will be a combination of things wheel balance and bearing checks are the first place to start followed up by bushing checks.

The damper has squiddly to do with wobble other than masking the actual cause of the wobble by curing the symptom and not the problem thats causing it.

the brakes are going to be a curly on without more info to go on

if hes not loosing fluid from the resivior then theres the chance the mastercylinder is recirculating fluid internally, when was his brake system last flushed with fresh fluid if hes doing it regularly particularly after hes done some work thats going to put heat into the brakes then it can be due to poor fluid condition.

My money would be on wheel bearings... Would explain the wobble as well him thinking that he needs to bleed the brakes.

While under there, I'd also suggest replacing the bushes on the radius arms and panhard rod.

First thing I'd do, check the bolts are all tight.

I already suggested he orders the kit for the master cylinder.Dave I think you are onto it,had a Series3 that was doing the similar thing but quicker.
Almost offered to get it in the shed, but was going out for most of today.
Will tell him to check the wheelbearings ASAP,he hasnt owned it long.He comes from Albany and bought it there, its first beach outing involved a seized transfecase,NO OIL

start by checking for movement at the tryes with ya foot park it on level ground and with park brake on try pushing fronts backwards and backs foward have an assistant look for movement ....

Sit in cab with engin running move steering slightly either way with a point on the bonnet eyed up to a fixed item like tree or fence or another car what ever this will show panhard rod, steering movement watching to see if veh moves from side to side with steering ....

My guess would be panhard tho could be rear chasis to trailing arm bushes tho the steering test above i find shows the movement in the front the best if ya have a good eye u will spot it easy

    Hi,

For my money Camel Landy is on it. Badly adjusted / stuffed front wheel bearings will cause wobble and pad knock back that will put the brake pedal feel near the floor.

I would also look at rear wheel bearing adjustment, panhard rod bushes, swivel pin bearings after attending to the above.

    cheers, DL

Andrew, I don't know if an 83 Rangie has the same front brake calipers as my 93 Disco, i.e. 4 piston calipers with 3 bleed screws, I changed fluid in my Disco because I kept loosing pedal, but the problem still persisted, I then read the W/shop manual (RTFM) and found the 3rd bleed screw which is on the outside of the caliper and needs the wheel to be removed to get at it. I had only been bleeding the 2 bleed screws that you can actually see, once the wheel is removed the outside top and the inside top bleed screws need to bled at the same time, after bleeding the bottom one. Since I bled the system Correctly I have had no more troubles with the brakes, hope this helps, Regards Frank.
