The pump pulley has adjustment more to aid fitting of the belt rather than having to change timing but every belt will be slightly different so this will allow for those differences without changing the more critical cam to crank timing.

If the injector pump is a little bit out it just wont start but it the cam is out the wrong way then you break stuff.

I think you will see there that there is no adjustment on the cam pulley on a 300Tdi, the adjustment is on the pump.

If you look you will find the pump spocket and the cam spocket are the same except they are reversed to each other and the three bolts in the centre allow for adjustment........I am still going from memory.

The hub for the cam and pump pulleys are definitely similar. There are three bolts on the the cam pulley similar to the pump pulley. There are slotted holes on the cam pulley also, but the bolts are in different holes - they may also be slotted.
I will have a good look at it tomorrow, but I think the cam pulley can be adjusted I'm not sure how much movement there is though.

From memory I agree with McRover. The adjust is only on the pump side with elongated holes. I think the cam is keyed so only goes on in one position.

I could be wrong but that's how I remember it when I replaced the cam seal.

Please correct us if we are wrong.

I pulled off my cam pulley prior to fitting the timing belt this morning. The cam pulley is definitely keyed to the hub so it can only go on in one position. The three bolts are in slotted holes, but the key prevents and movement.
