    1980 RR carbie adjustment

    I thought my Rangie has out of tune carbies as on cold starts if I floored it it would cough and splutter. The problem has since gotten worse, I have fitted a 2.5" exhaust and replaced the RR air filter with a couple of pods, if that's related.

    Anyway, it's now possible to make it stall when it's cold by flooring it.
    Have i diagnosed the problem correctly, and could anyone please tell me what the fix is?

    Re flat spot

    Very first thing would be to check that there is sufficient quantity and correct grade of oil in the carby dash pots. Just remove small pistons from top of each carby, add oil in the hole that pistons came from, (check grade and quantity in owners/workshop manual) Usually light engine oil is used, and filled to within a couple of centimeters from the top of the visible bore. I assume you have checked all items such as ignition timing, spark plugs, coil and leads etc? Check thermostat also as it can have a bearing on warm up time as well as running temp. There are many other possible problems, try these first. (I assume the cold start enrichment devices are working?)

    As you have changed the exhaust for a 2.5" system and removed the factory aircleaner, replacing it with a pair of pods, I would hazard a guess and say that the engine is now running too lean. That would explain the coughing and spluttering, especially when cold. Over time the rubber seals in the carburettors develop air leaks, which gradually leans out the air/fuel ratio. The changes that you have made via the exhaust and pods will have made the situation even worse. Be careful as running too lean can cause permanent engine damage

    The improved air flow into the engine via the pods especially will have a marked effect on how lean the engine will run. You will need to change the carburettor needles to suit the increased air flow.

    What type of carburettors are they, SU HIF6 or Zenith Strombergs / Solex?
    Which needles are you currently using?

    And make sure that the carbies are "balanced" for throttle opening ..... (both opening at the same time)

    Thanks everybody for the advice and info.
    She now has new sparks + leads - feels a lot better! Still has the same problem though. The coil is fine and so is the fuel filter. So I'm taking it in to my mates tommorow to have a squizzle at my Strombergs.

    First up don't rev the ring out of it while it's cold, carby engines dont like that at all. Second up check your vacuum advance is working by sucking on the hose, if you can suck without any restriction your Vac. Diagphram is cactus and needs replacing. Hold your pod filters up to the light and if you can see any light, bin them, do a search on the forum under K&N filters and get some info on Pod filters and others, you will end up dusting your motor and heed what the Others said, Regards Frank.

    After a very long absence . . .

    My diagphrams where cactus!
    After a replace my Rangie is Roving again.

    Also took the opportunity to change the gearbox oil, and boy does the 'ol 4spd feel better now!
    NOW to just sort out the damn electrics.
