why is chipping a TD5 so expensive?

ok, looks like I got shot down pretty quickly there, though I'm sensing a difference in what people deem expensive. Nonetheless thanks for all the advice, and it would seem that the prices are slowly dropping compared to when I was last looking (around $1000).

So, we shall move on.

Does anyone know where I can get a TD5 chipped in Perth for around the $500 mark?? Can I get one of these "Tombie" systems sent over and installed?

AND, assuming one drives at a steady and similar speed to before chipping does the fuel economy change?

The chipping doesn't seem to make the consumption any worse at all if you are driving the same.

I just spent $450 on a second-hand Haltech Interceptor :). Now to get it installed and dyno tuned. :(

I could have had the P38A chipped for a lot less (in total) but I want dual mapping for LPG and petrol.

When you say "chipping" do you mean physical chip replacement in ECU or remapping existing one? First off all you have to decide what to do, I think.

Physical chip inside an ECU just a controller, empty one costs a few dollars. A program inside that chip does the job, and what you have to pay for.

Now take a programmer's time/cost, let say $150/h + testing + etc. and it can came up to $X,000.00. Don't forget about long chain: programmer-manager-accountant-ceo-marketing-saller-resaller-... where everyone makes/puts his own $ up on actuall cost.

I have "Tombie system", it works OK for me and didn't change the fuel economy a lot. And it can't be sent over and installed. Your ECU has to catch up with "Tombie workshop" somehow :) Forum Search can give you most answers.

the said tombie is in whyalla.
my fuel consumption average is 13l/100k. 15/100k towing 2.5ton and 10's if i baby it.
