ive got 195kw and 500nm and it cost me 1200 for the IC and hoses and 450ish for the chip....

I thought that it was pretty cheap also. There is about no chance of getting that much more power from a petrol engine for the same cost.

R & D.........warranty (on the chip that is)
Your kidding. I paid $500 from TRS. Best $500 I ever spent. A mate has a Prado and wants the same done. He was quoted between $1200-$1400!
Your paying for the software, experience and knowledge of the fitter. Ask yourself, could you do it on your driveway? Maybe not and if you had the gear and stuffed it up its all down to you with no come back.
I'm happy to pay.
When they first came out they could be a tad dear at nearly $1000, but now they are around $500 with a bit of competition going on. This is assuming you are talking the chip upgrades offered by Tombie, TR Spares etc not piggy back units?
LR owners actually have it lucky here, go and look what Toyota owners are paying for similar piggyback units at up to $2k for the electronics only.
In a LR you would get the chip a bigger inter cooler, hoses and some dyno time for that.
Even the generic Holden memcalls are $400 plus for the cheap ones and they are a huge market for sales and recouping R&D.

And yes, your paying for knowledge, support etc...
The programming hardware etc isnt cheap you know!
As indicated above, whether chipping is considered cheap or expensive depends on how you look at it.
It is a cheap way of increasing performance, compared to any other option.
But it is expensive considering that the actual chip costs probably less than $50, perhaps less than $10.
However, the supplier has spent a considerable amount on software development and on computer hardware, and these costs have to be spread over a only very small number of TD5s chipped in Australia, to which has to be added insurance.

I think $500 is extremely reasonable. Same price as a couple of shocks, or a couple of tyres or even a couple of fills of diesel (OK - maybe 3).......
