    Question $$ to rebuild a 3.9

    Hello all,
What should I be expecting to pay for all the bits I'm going to need to rebuild my 3.9L, looks like I'll require

    Big ends
    Mains
    Lifters
    Gaskets
    Possibly Rings

+ any thing else I should do while its in bits?

If the heads are damaged I have a spare set on a 3.5 if they'll fit?

    Cheers
    David

When you pit the heads back on, don't torque the outer 4 bolts down as per the manual. They just need to be there to fill the holes. Just a very light touch. Later heads (VIN MA onward) don't have provision for the bolts at all. The 4.0/4.6 blocks generally don't even have the holes in the blocks (mine does but the heads don't).

That will stop the head warping and consequent leaks.

    Thanks Ron,

just checked, mine dont have the outer 4 bolts as per the book, so no probs there.

am thinking about pulling he ZF out to get it serviced while the engines out.

then again if it's all to exe Ive got a carbied 302 and auto I'd like to slot in and hook up o the gas

    cheers

I wouldn't use the 3.5 heads as they have small port sizes

AFAIK 3.5 ports are the same as 3.9 ports, although injection ports have a notch where the injector is. ( 2 minutes with a Dremel). There are differences between casting numbers but from observation the ports are the same. In fact IMHO the later heads have worse exhaust ports as on my 3.9 anyway, it appeared that the casting mould had worn/slipped.

Depending if you keep the car or are nit picking like me.
1 new cam and chain, and lifters. If high mileage new cam bearings
2 probably new rockers and shafts
3 probably recod timing cover/oil pump
    4 line bore of block.
    6 maybe regrind crank
7 If keeping insert top hat liners ( I would do this if I had my engine in bits anyway)
    Regards Philip A
