yep there is a very (has been to a few members) troublesome wastegate modulator that opens the wastegate upon overboost, but i think its only on the disco. if overboost is still detected then it will shut down the fuelling and go into limp mode.Quote:

I was the owner of a TD5 discovery but have now got a Patrol with a ZD30 engine, I realy like it, has heaps of guts tows better than the discovery did, but it does come at a cost a couple of weeks ago while towing a coupe of ton it lost a cylinder, I switched it of and rolled to a stop and had it towed home, When I pulled it down all 4 pistons had cracks and no1 had blown a hole behind the top ring, the bore was perfect even after 247000klm, It was a cheep fix but alot of labour for me, pistons, rings head gasket, and head bolts came to $715 plus oil and filter totaled under $1000 and its back on the road, If asked what I would rather have I guess the patrol cause it has more room for the kids and purchase price is about the same for a second hand one. Its a shame about the problems patrols have because it leaves you stuck beside the road, atleast with the landrover you only need to put up with 3 dash lights and an auto in limp mode plus a rear dragging on the ground waiting for another $800 air bag compressor, I guess when the diesel rangerovers get a bit cheeper thats what I will get Cheers
No.3 son (BroomeDefender) & daughter in law have moved to Fitzroy Crossing with work. He's about to buy a NEW Nissan Patrol diesel, mainly for her to drive. Will the Nissan give them grief ????

Gee I dont know, Every time I drive mine I just love it, Ive had 5 landcruisers then the discovery, but the patrol goes like a rocket maybe thats why it had a melt down, Im going to put boost and egt guages in so I can keep an eye on things, I think if I got a new one I would put these guages in and make sure boost stays under 15 and ex temp stays under 450 and all should be fine, I would get another oneQuote:

EGT should be safe for spikes up to 750 but sustained (i.e. towing into a headwind or a long hill) 600-650 is better. I don't know what the ZD30 does stock but I imagine 450 would be exceeded on a flat road cruise.
I have travelled around Oz twice now.Both times the number of Nissans that were on the side of the road were unbelievable...all with the same problems..blown motors.Shame really the rest of their drive train is as it has always been..tough as old boots. Never saw any 6's though but that motor is no longer available.

Actually I have first hand heard of 1 new trayback with excessive oil consumption and blowby, and yes it WAS run in properly:(. Spends too much of its time at the dealer for my liking. I still think they are trying too hard with these engines. If only they had less output and paid more attention to vehicle weight then they'd be more reliable IMHO.Quote:
