You probably mean Castrol VMX-M 75W/85. It's a light GL4 gear oil developed for Mitsubishi manual gearboxes.

It should be fine for the R380, although, not being synthetic, it might need changing more often than Syntrans - the R380 can get pretty hot when offroad.

I personally would not use ATF long term, due to insufficient lubricity at high temperatures. It's probably why LR changed to MTF94.

BTW, bloody good price for it.

Syntrans in the gearbox, syntrax in the transfer case right??? and you can use which one in the diffs again????

Syntrax for the xfer case because of the diff, so same oil in the front & rear diffs.

I generally change all drive line oils every 20,000kms anyway, so should not be an issue. At $40 odd for 4 litres is a lot cheaper than Syntrans. Would be nice to be able to get syntans in 4lt containers and save a bit in cost. Valvoline alos do a synthetic 75/85 for about $42 for 4 litres, not sure how good though.
The VMX-M 75/85 seems like a good compromise and is easily available. Will see how it runs and maybe next change use Syntrans next change.
But at $32 a litre is a bit steep.
The Mitsubishi boxes and the R380 are very similar. Have had both and destroyed the bearings in a Pajero. The guy that I had repair it showed me some of this and said he had seen LT77 and early R380s do exactly the same due to similarities in design with the later R380 being a bit better.
The VMX-M should at least be better than ATF anyway.

Would be nice if the Penrite variant or even MTF94 was readily available down this way, but it is special order form all. Caltex do not even stock the MTF94 and there are 2 Caltex servos in town. So I will use what is readily available.
Will give the VMX-M 5,000kms and then may drop it to see how it is performing.

I had dreadfull gear changes especially 2nd and 3rd.

I ran Pentrite Synthetic ATF but while this was good initially gear changes actually got worse.

Tried Penrite manual 75 but this was woeful in the box although I didn't really give it long enough to bed in. (only three days......just couldn't stand it any more)

So went with Syntrans and have been with that for about 10,000km and still think it is the best compromise for me.

Cold mornings can make it a little harder to change to 2nd but I sometimes warm up the gearbox by leaving it in gear with transfer case in neutral. This helps a lot.

Anyone tried Penrite Manual 70? Not a synthetic though so maybe no good with high temps.

Will try Redline next time round cause I can get it fairly easy.

So Craig, I'm assuming that your R380 is a "crunchie" box too? One thing I noticed with the MTF 94 in it, was the further north I got (e.g. Hobart to Townsville) the worse it got. When changed there was almost 0 particles on the sump plug magnet.

I guess now it still grates on 2 3 upchange n down change but its must less noticable.

My My03 D2 has been hard to get into 2nd since new, but at least with Syntrans its just a bit hard when cold and no problem at all once warmed a little. I've recently renewed Syntrans after 80K on the 1st lot and it will be there for another 80K. 2nd was always hard/crunchie with MTF94.
