Well, I hear you about range but at the same time I suppose it depends on its intended uses. I myself doing things close to towns would be happy to have a v8 even if i Only got 300kms per tank. It would be a little annoying having to fill up so often but it would be the price I pay for chaper motoring.
Hi we have been on a big trip towing our caravan and got average 22litres per 100k on Petrol the car also has Lpg a 55litre tank that we were getting approx 200k on so that is what made us think about a tdi but we are also looking at the possibility of putting a long range petrol tank in. We had the motor rebuilt in Jan of this yr and the car went like a dream just a tad thirsty is all.
In all honesty, over a 5 year period, there is little difference between the 2 for running costs, this has been shown a couple of times on this site.
If you already are happy with the set up and are more after range then I would be inclined to fit a long range tank and keep the V8..........:eek:
It will always cost more to change cars than it costs to keep the one you have and you already know the one you have so I would spend a few grand on fixing what you dont like and a long range tank and keep it.
Mine has a 135ltr tank and with all the accessories the best I can get is around the 11s and I get a regular mid 13s in traffic and 14 to 15 towing or with a head wind.
Over taking with a 300Tdi is the main down side which the V8 has it beat as the V8 will pull up to speed quicker than the 300Tdi will, you really have to plan when you over take.
There is a high possibility that you will save money with a diesel but no guarentee as with the economy comes the extra price of the fuel but then you could run it on home made Bio which is cheaper again.
There is plusses and minuses on both sides of the coin, but just think, normal driving I was getting 22's out of our ZG Jeep cherokee so your not doing too bad :D

Without buying into the D1 vs. D2 debate as they both have their pluses and minuses, just food for thought:
Did a trip down south (WA) in June in the Td5, 2 x adults, 2 x kids, bags & baggage with bicycles, scooters etc on the roof rack and got about 9.5l/100klms - I know that's not towing a van but you get the idea. I get about the same around town, 9.5-10l/100 highway/city, aircon on/aircon off.
I also have a long range tank meaning I could probably squeeze 1200 - 1300kms out of it if I had to and very rewarding to fill up for the fortnight when diesel's cheap - or at least cheaper than it has been...

look all you guys reccomending the discos and the deefers with either the tdi300 td5/v8 all need your heads examining..... do what I did...
go buy a cheap series landy, find a series diesel to chuck in it then once a fortnight or so sling it a couple of liters of diesel then pull up at your local fish and chip shop on the night that they change the oil in the fryers siphon that into the tank through he INBUILT strainer thats in the filler neck.
gets me about 10k/l if i drive nice and costs me umm about $5 for the diesel and about $20 for a feed for 3 from the place I grab the WVO from.
ok in all seriousness...
if you want economy and/or the ability to ford water over the level of the diffs you go for a diesel.
if your a technophobe and/or you want to run bio you get the tdi
if you want to put v8s to shame you get the TD5 and chip it.

The comments above about the V8 not being a real power house are of course true... but when I first drove a couple of TD5's I still had reservations of whether I could live with the further reduced power.
Well, I bit the bullet and did change, but I also chipped the new one and I could not be happier. It is noisier.. but other than that it is a far nicer car to drive than my v8 now!.. more power and greatly improved economy. It pulls my off road camper just as well as the V8 ever did. I really can't see any negatives to my decision at all.
What was right for me.. may well not be right for you.
I'd suggest have a good think about how you plan to use it in the future... do the numbers on ever option... Drive a few of the options you consider viable and I am sure you will find the right solution for you.
