so who's ripped a burnout in a landy
Drove my Defender 130 around for a couple of weeks with the centre diff locked and without the left rear drive axle. Removed it and replaced the hub when it stripped at 40,000 km. Was rusty /fretted. Probably less grease was put in it on assembly than the other 3, which were okay.
Got a pair of standard axles from a bloke who installed a diff lock and upgraded to Maxi. Since then, have periodically half filled the plastic drive hub caps with grease /hypoid oil concoction and slapped them back on. Keeps splines well lubricated but not enough to cause leakage onto brakes through grease seals. Have some oil seals to replace them with some day.
The only problem is that the wheels are often dirty from a bit of oil seeping from the plastic caps. Have not tried any measures to seal them better. Generally my wheels get dirtier from dogs watering them anyway.
As experienced by those who have driven around with front drive disconnected and centre diff locked, there was a lot more backlash noise with rear drive components going at normal speed but not taking any load.
