The only benefit is probably a significant reduction in driveline backlash.
I know that our japero handles like crap in the wet in 2wd. I have to put it into 4 hi with centre unlocked to cope with the canberra roads even at very low speeds.
The only benefit is probably a significant reduction in driveline backlash.
Actually it DOES reduce the backlash, as when you fit a part time kit, you replace the centre diff with a full spool, so it eliminates the backlash of the centre diff, as opposed to driving with the front shaft out and centre diff locked, incurring the total lash of the centre diff and rear diff, as opposed to just the rear diff![]()
Rovercare, just a small hi-jack, with the front shaft off and running with the CDL locked (driving just the rear diff) is there any damage caused or is it detrimental to the T/C to drive in this mode, my Son broke a front tailshaft in his Stage 1 and he is driving on the rear axle alone, Regards Frank.
Rovercare is correct - no worries. But do not use low range!

It is interesting that people say that you get better economy from rear wheel drive only as opposed to constant 4WD. I drove my S2 TD5 manual for about 2 weeks in rear wheel drive only with the CDL engaged while the front shaft was being rebuilt. The car definitely handled differently and I didnt like it either. I went through a full tank of fuel whilst in 2WD and noticed very little difference in fuel usage. I constantly get 10L/10km.
