I was also checking my vac advance recently and the rubber boots promptly split - I replaced with appropriate diameter vac hose from supercheap - cannot remember what diameter but took the old bit along to check diameter - seems to do the trick.
However I did discover that my vac advance is stuffed - not holding vacuum so shelled out for a replacement part.
So now I have a question for knowledgeable types - is it straightforward to replace the vac advance unit (3.9 V8) - any tips/pitfalls?
I checked RAVE (and Haynes ;)) but found no instructions...

Mr, Blacknight just changed mine & it seemed to be a relatively easy job..... oh & we just used Vacuum hose, works perfectly!!!

Pull off dizzy cap leaving HT leads as is and take off vacuum hose.
If you can’t access either of the 2X vacuum mounting screws (torx heads), mark distributer body position in relation to timing cover, release distributer clamp (15mm spanner under power steer pump) and rotate distributer to get access.
Mark rotor position to distributor housing and remove rotor (maintain some pressure to circlip/washer with screwdriver if rotor hard to lift off).
Remove 3 X phillips screws and take off plastic insulation cover to expose vacuum arm.
Remove 2X torx mounting screws, unhook arm from plate and remove old vacuum.
Refit new vacuum ensuring arm is hooked up on the plate (use some medium strength theadlocker on 2X Torx screws) .
Test operation by sucking on vacuum tube to ensure plate rotates approximately 7/8 degrees. (proper test of advance with out and with vacuum connected should show that vacuum advance of approx 15 crank degrees is all in by approx 2,500 RPM).
Replace plastic insulation cover.
If moved rotate distributer back to original marked position and tighten clamp.
Refit rotor and cap in original position (before hand a couple of drops of oil down rotor shaft before replacing rotor (oils mechanical advance) and inspect rotor and cap contacts and HT brush/contacts for tracking and wear while your there).
Note: Your initial advance will need resetting if the arm length between old and new vacuum units was different (rare but not unheard of) and or the old diaphragm had stiffened/shrunk significantly with age.

Just to follow up on my request for help here, I found the correct part number at a local mail order stockist, for which they wanted $23. However, I decided to try the el cheapo option too, and got metre or so of 2.5mm vacuum pipe at the local Supercrap for the princely sum of $3.
Seems to work a treat.:clap2:
