    Off topic commodore v8

One of my sons has a 96 commodore, just clocked 100k.

    Has the Holden 5 litre.

It has a coolant leak we just cant find.Did leak on the thermostat housing, have fixed that.Oil looks ok,could it be the valley gasket, does anyone know how to check?

The leak is only small, around a litre of top up every 4 weeks.

Maybe we need to pump up the coolant systm & then look for leaks?

    Waterpump,hoses,radiator & cap seem ok,doesnt overheat...

    Any help would be appreciated

a pressure test may expose the leak and it may not.... im going to use a dirty word and will probably expose my self to lots of flaming.... but..... barsleaks! for a leak that small it will work a treat.
if you want to go looking for it, it may cost a bit to repair, where as the barsleak will prolong the enivitable.

    cheers phil

    Heater core for sure.Common fault.
You can change the heater core without removing dash.Trick is to cut the heater pipes at the console, cut the newie the same and re-join the pipes with heater hose and clamps.

Thanks guys, dont want to use barrs unless i have to......
I was looking at the hoses going to the heater core this arvo,& thinking hope not.

As it doesnt get real cold here,i may bypass it,& that will prove if it is the problem.

The leak is only just big enough to be a pain in the butt

Do you mean cut the pipes under the dash to make it easier to change?,& then run the hoses through the firewall

Find it and fix it. Otherwise it will really let go when you take it for a long hot fast run.

    Maybe welsh / core plugs.
4.2 and 5.0 litre holdens are renowned for them especially if coolant has not been used.
The ones on the sides of the block can be done with the engine in the car, if it is the rear ones the engine or gear box has to come out.
