thanks for the video, i'll have to compair with my td5. where did you get the lemon??:D im wondering if a provent would be a bennificial fit in the meantime while you try and bed it in?

Phil I'm a prof photographer and it was the closest and light round thing I could find.....
TEST : I opened the oil filler cap and had someone closing the exhaust at the back with a rag shut. I immediately had a stronger steady flow of air coming out of the hole but NO smoke or oily smell. Take the rag away and you get smoky hot air smelling like oil and pulsating from the filler hole.
What does this indicate ?
Remember I had the middle box removed long time ago, would a slight lack of back pressure slow the bedding process down, or not.

the center muffler missing? i couldnt see this causing any issue in reguards to the bedding in process. as for blocking the tail pipe, it cant really be anything apart from the rings passing gas.

i have bugger all blow by from both dip stick and filler cap. so minimal i can just feal it on the hairs on my arm (this is another proven method:D)
and from the dipstick i have a light wisper of oil mist, kinda looks like smoke.
most of the movement in the first video is from the engine fan, i had just got back from a run into the city.
this motor has 63 thou k's on the clock and has had a big ecu program in it for 25 thou.

Is it just me, I'd be more worried about the oil report that suggests possible bearing failure, and the bearings looked a bit dodgy in the earlier photo.

OK, I'm no expert, but I know a few blokes who are, so this is a rough amateur interpretation :p
Mg, Ca, P, Zn, Mo, B, Ba are all normal oil additives and at the levels you would expect in a good diesel oil.
PQ is a direct reading of all the containments in the sample.
A reading under 10 is very low.
The PQ index is very, very helpful when you are having a component failure as the PPM counts are blind to anything over a certain size. (50 micron ??)
Not all labs show a PQ index reading.
Just thinking the PQ may be masked by the excellent centrifuge filter too. Might bounce that one off a couple of experts I know.
Fe is OK
Al is OK and entirely acceptable for an engine running in. Ideally you'd like it lower.
Cu could be lower, but is OK.
Si is a touch too high, yet that level wouldn't show the Pb level you experienced, although long term it would lead to wear. If the air filter was dodgy or not sealing, this level would be higher.
Some Si may also be from any RTV gasket used during the rebuild, however...
Na is also way too high, (although this wouldn't flag at the lab) and this with the Silicon indicates dirt contamination or grit.
Sulphation and oxidation are OK but it'd be nice for them to be lower but a bit hard with the lack of ring seal.
Soot is a touch high for the mialge, and not unexpected considering the ring situation.
Looks like the lab is unable to read under 1% with fuel.
TBN (base #) of 10 shows that the oil is hardly stretched at that milage and has plenty of acid fighting ability left.
Pb you know about :eek:
I'd be double checking bearing clearances and the pump for flow and pressure.
With the current rebuild, as the bores were honed insitu it's hard to get the things properly clean so i'd be doing a couple of early oil dumps to get the conataminents out of the system ASAP.
