Merry Christmas. I've just read your thread for the first time and, pardon me if I've missed it, but I don't think anyone's yet mentioned checking the crankcase ventlation system?
Is the path from the tappet cover through the oil separator and into the inlet duct between the air cleaner to the turbo inlet completely clear? Could some mechanic have stuffed a wad of rag into a hose when the engine was dismantled and forgotten to take it out?
On my 300Tdi, I know that only a bit of extra restriction in the ventilation path can cause enough crankcase pressure to force oil through the turbo bearings and it blows absolute clouds of blue oil smoke at idle.
