    Thanks BAZ - I slept over it and yes I agree. There is a lot to find on oil for the TD5 and I've decided on Delo 400.

    Jakes I am no expert but I do remember discussing TD5 engines with a technical manager at the dealer here and he categorically said that a 5W40 was recommended. I don't know how anecdotal it was but he said that the tolerances are so fine that a thicker oil can cause problems and they had one brought in with a broken crankshaft from using a thicker oil...

    <edit> just re-read your post and I agree, I wouldn't use anything heavier than an xW-40 in a TD5, it just isn't necessary and could be very detrimental. I've left the stuff below as someone may get something out of it. </edit>

    A 15W-40 and 5W-40 are virtually identical viscosities at operating temps.
    In fact, a 5W-40 may be thinker at 100*C than a comparable 15W-40.
    Roughly from 10*C and up most 15W-40's mimic the viscosity of a 5W-40, and depending on the oils viscosity index, (which is a function of its base oils and viscosity index improver's, if used) a 15W-40 can be thinner at 0*C than a 5W-40.

    It's only at North America type winter temperatures that 0W, 5W and 10W oils come into their own. The xW part refers to the oils pumpability at various temps below 0*, the 30, 40, 50 part to a viscosity range at 100*C.

    It aint always simple or obvious when it comes to lubes.

    This chart is a little out of date, and a new version has been released that will come force in Jan or Feb (the HTHS numbers change a little on the diesel oils) but it will give you an idea.

    Hi Jakes,

    Merry Christmas. I've just read your thread for the first time and, pardon me if I've missed it, but I don't think anyone's yet mentioned checking the crankcase ventlation system?

    Is the path from the tappet cover through the oil separator and into the inlet duct between the air cleaner to the turbo inlet completely clear? Could some mechanic have stuffed a wad of rag into a hose when the engine was dismantled and forgotten to take it out?

    On my 300Tdi, I know that only a bit of extra restriction in the ventilation path can cause enough crankcase pressure to force oil through the turbo bearings and it blows absolute clouds of blue oil smoke at idle.

    TD5 Blow-by - not yet

    Hi All
    I just joined this group.
    I have read Jakes posts regarding blow-by.
    My TD5 Disco does not have blow-by yet.
    It does how ever tend to become hot and loose power even while driving at 100km/h(30degC ambient).
    I have not done any tests but where do I start to look.
    The Disco has covered 205000km's.
    Mods include upped Turbo boost and had the injectors "set".(calibrated)
    I do not drive it hard due to the temp issue.
    I used to use 10W40 Castrol Magnatex oil(Jakes would know) but switched to 10W60 Castrol Edge Synthetic with no change in power or temp.
    My owners manual does list 10W60 as usable.

    Oh and with regard to my strange temp readings - the coolant sensor was a 120'C VDO and both ones I have seem to go weird at around 100'C. I purchased a 50-150'C VDO and problem solved.

    I'm about to do an oil change. Can I move up to 20W60 Helix high milage or stick to my Rimula X at 15W40. I've done 615km's now, the cheap oil seems fine and new still, but I'm now pedantic about cleanliness and contamination. Summer over here so no cold mornings for a while.

    Any update on the blowby issue. My TD5 defender 90, originollay from Disco, is suffering the same symptoms as yours after a complete rebuild from scratch, except more severe.
