How much does a replacement Tdi or Td5 cylinder head cost? or a 3.9-4.6 slipped liner?.I'll do mine every year so I don't find out. Pat

Interestingly, LR replaced the coolant in the fender at 3 years and said that was the schedule.
the life of the coolant is 5 years or 100K Km...
the projected life of a landy is 100k Km every 3 years.
Sounds to me like ya all on somethig do this use that :confused:
I decided at 30,000ks to use NULON coolant when I was replacing a top hose I noticed carosion starting were the hose goes on since the NULON went in no more cancer on the pipe and now upto 250,000ks
Pat,
I think they may be feeding you a line. Having lived in Kambalda / Kalgoorlie for 24 years, there is more than one coolant that works well. It would be because that is what they stock and get a good deal on, same as LR dealer used to use Castrol RX Super engine oil which is not LR prefered but worked as good and had same specs. Not saying the Texaco green is not good as it is.
I have to say I never had any trouble with any car that used a reasonable coolant with scheduled replacement and flush. Only in the early days with water (demin but water still the same) and a V8 Torana.
I have run Nulon OAT coolant in the TD5 and have had no issues with that in 40+ degree heat. I have run Tectalloy green (top level) in the Disco 97, Nissan Patrol MK, Toyota BJ, Mitsubishi Pajero (head corrosion done by previous owner running tap water and dealer covering up), Falcons, Commodores, HQ panel van. Have also use Castrol green coolant in some of these. Holden orange/red coolant in VT Commodore and WK Statesman.
Have had absolutelly no problem with these overheating at all.
The biggest issue up there is people not cleaning their radiator fins, flushing and changing regularly, using tap water or not changing their coolant when it starts to discolour.
There are also rad specialists that have been up there a lot longer too and I know a couple as my BIL used to be work for one. They probablly will all use different brands and have similar results.
I just usually make sure they use a product I am happy with.
Plus I do my coolant changes at the longest 20,000kms or 2 years max for the oat. On average is more like 12 - 18 months. 12 months for petrols or green coolant.
Until now I've only used Nulon 44 and never had a problem but if the Texaco green does the job just as well I'll be happy. You have hit the nail on the head as far as proper service of the cooling system goes,I think most if not all overheating related problems occur through lack of service not lack of coolant quality. Pat
Oh, and I ran Tectalloy in the MK Nissan towing a caravan in up to 54 deg c heat in the NW without any overheating.
While Tectalloy is probablly not the cream of the crop, it is significantly cheaper and as long as regular servicing is done it is OK.
Many opinions and views on what people think is the correct coolant to use. Attached is an extract from the Manufacturer's documentation for a D2 that will clear up any confusion.
Note: any ethylene glycol based antifreeze can be used as long as it doesn't contain methanol and uses Organic Acid Technology corrosion inhibitors.
Cheers
Ones Green dye and ones Red dye it's what it says on the lable that counts and you dont see that normally.
You can get Green OAT and HOAT you can also get it in yellow and a blue colour if you want, you could mix them and make a wierd purple colour now that would be funny :p
As long as it meets the specs that the manufacturer sets for it and it is changed at regular intervals (which is not 100,000kms or 5 years) then it WILL be fine and not the cause of any future breakdowns or wngine damage, TD5's do that all by them selves :wasntme:
