It sort of depends a bit nowdays, as modern diesel injectors are electronically fired, but basically as you said, there is a soelnoid / relay that stops the fuel supply when the ignition is switched off.

Not sure how to state this, but Im pretty much an inquisitive youngster. Well compared to the average AULROian
I just have a few questions
Number one being:
Too kill the motor on a petrol, you turn the key off which cuts the circuit thus preventing the spark plug from firing; in turn making no explosion therefore stopping the motor. Right?
How does this work with a diesel?
Does turning the key stop the fuel or what? Seeing as there are no spark plugs and the engine works on compressing the fuel

It can be mechanical or electronic. Mercedes has a mechanical lever that is vacuum actuated when the ignition is turned off. Our Kubota has a lever that you pull to shut it down. It's also got a knob that forces the exhaust valves open to release compression, handy if the engine ever ran away. You can buy shutdown valves to put in the air intake in case of runaway too.

Actually this got me thinking, I really ought to install one of those emergency air shutoffs as I have an auto now and have NFI how I'd shut it down if it did run away.
Petrol motor stops because you have turned off the electricity to the sparkplugs
Diesel motor stops because you have turned off the fuel supply

petrol engines stop straight away because you turn off the spark but you are also turning off the fuel on the injected engines and in some of the carbie engines.
in most diesels all your doing is stopping the fuel from coming out of the injectors tho some also flap the air intake and exhaust closed as well (but not in landies)
in the series the shut down is just turning off the spark and in the diesels its just winding the fuel collar to a position that relates to no fuel by means of a pull stop cable
in the carby v8s its turning off the spark and in the EFI its the spark and the fuel, in the tdi diesels your turning off a solenoid that needs to be engergised to allow the injector pump to push fuel to the injectors
in the TD5 your turning off the fuel injectors by killing the power to the ECU that controls them and at the same time you are turning off the fuel pump that feeds the injectors fuel.
havent gotten round to nutting it out on the rebadged transit diesel yet.

You missed one - in the Isuzu diesel it works like the Series with a stop cable, but this is operated by a small electric motor and gearbox that resides in a plastic bag to the right side of the brake pedal mount in the engine compartment.

the suzi pulls on a lever that bypasses the govenor control of the rack and yanks it to the no fuel position..
unlike the series ones tho if for some reason something goes wrong with the cable in the run position you can still pull the lever on the suzi whereas the series has a solid "wire" that you usually have to bend beyond repair or cut to be able to move the lever again.
