As a general rule, diesel engines give best fuel economy when operating close to the point where they deliver maximum torque. With the Land Rover aerodynamics, drag will most likely put this point just below the maximum torque rpm.

Actually, it is the BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption) figure for the engine that we are interested in, but these are not often available. For most diesels the rpm when this is a minimum, is close to the rpm when torque is a maximum.

I don't have published data for the 300Tdi, but IMHO 2000 rpm is on the slow side. With any sort of a load (hills etc.) a 300Tdi seems to me to be just starting to make useful torque at 2000 rpm.

The most recent trip in the 98 Tdi Auto, with steel bull bar, and loaded up with recovery gear and luggage, with A/C on in 40c plus heat, would get

    Open road:
940kms using approx 78 litres which equates to figures of
    33.98 Miles per Imperial gallon (4.546 L)
    28.3 Miles per USA gallon ( 3.785 L)
    8.31 Litres per 100km
    12.04 k's per Litre

Around town it drops to around 10 litres per hundred

The Tdi has 220,000kms, tyres are ATs

Full length roof rack, Bull bar, 50mm lift, 31" BFG AT's

Doing the annual Xmas rounds up the Hume to Wang, Numurkah, Shep, Mooroopna etc 789kms for 92ltrs = 11.66ltr/100kms

That was sitting on 100kmh on the Hume in the 110 zone (Not wanting to lose double points) and 95kmh in the 100 zone due to traffic.

Then on the familly camping trip at Xmas we did 830kms for 112ltrs = 13.4ltr/100kms.

That was fully loaded with roof rack chockers, bikes on the back, fridge, recovery gear and other luggage.

The worst Ive ever had was in the 15's towing a heavy cage trailer to Wangaratta and then to Numurkah which had a tarp around it which acted as a huge parachute.

My 90 does about 9-10 ltrs per 100k on a run

But uses so littel fuel that i don't worry about it.

Although the disco does use alot more than the 90 , but i put that down to weight and it being Auto
